This website is about the alumni, family and friends of the Kottayam Medical College, Kottayam, Kerala, India. The batch is popularly known as KMC 1973. Most of the 1978 graduates of Kottayam Medical College are now well respected doctors serving all over the world. But, as this website shows, they also keep the connections between them well.

For Full Size Class Picture click here. (Warning: The full size picture is about 60 inches in width and has a file size of 750 KB. So, if you have a slow internet connection it may take some time to load. But here you may be finally able to recognize some of your class mates. Thanks Meena for providing the original photo.)

Mathukutty and Company Rolling out the Red Carpet for a Reunion to Beat all others

Saturday and Sunday August 2-3, 2008

From the little bit I heard, this is going to be a memorable reunion. Mathukutty requests that everyone arrive by Friday evening/night so we can start the program bright and early on Saturday with an all day boat ride. WOW!!

No bananas will be served; but I heard George with his Canadian Dollars at an all time high and Philsamma buying all those bananas will be bringing all those bananas he had been stuffing into the closet. (In case you do not know, Leena and Meena prohibits their spouses from eating bananas they love; Philsamma, on the other hand, wants George to eat all the bananas and George hates them.)

A Fair Warning: Savio had been studying a bible CD all year long to be ready for the quiz. We cannot tell you if a quiz will be held and, if so, what subjects will be selected. So, come prepared. Last year, Money's team lost more points than anyone on questions about Wisconsin. So, these may not be as easy as you think. Does that mean we should study about Utica (or Ootah). I am not sure.

KMC Forum Mail Voted the Best

Our Mathew Periappuram (MP) recently visited South Africa. I understand that he nearly had a heart attack seeing some of the sights there. Apparently, he was saved by instructions sent by Meena in an email sent through the KMC forum early this year. So, MP has voted that this tips on surviving a heart attack (when you are alone) as the best he received from the KMC Forum.

Here is the link for those who missed it. To download, right click on the link and choose "Save Target as"

How to survive a heart attack.

PS: Meena liked the instructions in this document because the way Meena sees it, if you are busy deep breathing, you cannot be eating bananas.

Difficulty Receiving Emails from KMC1973? Add us to your Safe List. Here is How

Many of our friends reported that they have difficulty in receiving mail from the KMC1973 Yahoo Forum. Most probably it is because of spam filtering. (emails originating from yahoo.com and hotmail.com are routinely filtered out.)  Although ISP's constantly change the ways the emails are filtered to be one step ahead of spammers, one of the way to survive this is to add our email to your "safe" list. To learn how to do it, click here. (http://www.1stmedicine.com/KMC/safe.htm )

Secret Ingredient Discovered

Unless you were hiding in another planet, you would have heard of the heavenly tea Annie makes.
After a lot of investigation and legwork, we discovered the secret behind this tea - it is the ingredient used.
Annie uses a special tea grown specially for her and Savio in a tea estate owned by Savio's family in Wynad.
Purportedly, this tea has a secret "DNA" implanted.
(Annie is quick to point out that her special way of brewing the tea also is one reason for its great aroma, and taste.)
In this Paparazzi photo (sent by mistake by Savio), Annie and Savio inspecting the tea in Wynad during their last trip to India.

Charity Begins at Home

KMC-73 Group has helped to pay for these uniforms at the Government UP School in Muvattupuzha.
The drive was organized by Madhu. (See story below.)

Current News Briefs of KMC 1973 (Kottayam Medical College Alumni 1973 Batch)

Xavier Loses Mother
Dr. Xavier C Moolayil's mother died on October 3, 2006. She was 89. Had a sudden death. She was staying with his brother Dr. Mathew C Moolayil at Vazhappally, Changanacherry. Funeral was at Changanacherry Valiyapalli on 4th October morning. (Jose Tom)

Madhu Organizes Charity Drive in Muvattupuzha
Around Onam time, Madhu asked if there was any interest in KMC alumni to help provide school uniforms to poor kids. One Govt. Primary School in Muvattupuzha (Govt. Town U.P. School, Muvattupuzha 686661) was in dire need of some financial help for its poor nursery class children for their school uniforms. The kids come from very poor families who cannot afford to buy the uniforms. There were about 50 kids. The cost for providing uniforms to all the kids was estimated at about Rs. 10,000.

KMC alumni in North America immediately jumped on the bandwagon. Within minutes 5 alumni (Philsamma/George, Jaya/Ike, Savio/Annie, Mathew Joseph/Leena, and Shila/Jacob) pledged enough money to cover the entire expense for providing the school uniforms. The money was sent to Madhu for presenting to the school authorities on behalf of all KMC alumni.

On September 26, 2006 Madhu handed over the charity donation to the school authorities. According to Madhu, this was a timely gift. "The condition of some of the children are so pitiful. You can imagine the children of our towns' government primary schools which cater to the below poverty line children."

The Municipal Chairman, Headmaster, PTA President etc. were there when the cheques were handed over to the Headmaster. (Madhusudanan MS)

Thank you Madhu for adopting this cause and following it through. You are the true hero.

It was a KMC-73 project. We all shine when we make another person smile. In this case, we get a chance to make a whole lot of kids happy. There is no better feeling in this world.  Thank you all for participating on this great cause. After all, there is more to American KMC-ites than American Ammayimar. (JM)

Surprise Party at Cochin
We ar eincluding a story as written by Jose Tom as it is:
Today (a day in September 2006) started as any other normal day. Eapen had called me few days back to enquire about a visit of MP at Ernakulam since none of us could go to his house after his fathers death due to various reasons. Soman told yesterday that he is willing to come though he has to go to hospital in the morning. Vijayakumar and Gopi had other engagements. Mohandas called today morning to say that he can also get free from a meeting in the nearby temple by the time we reach his place at Kanjiramattom. So Eapen, on the way from Kanjirappally picked up Soman from District Hospital, Kottayam, myself from my home proceeded to Mohandas's house. He was very much prepared to serve us break fast or an eye opener, which ever we preferred. His wife offered lunch on return. With great difficulty we refused all offers and proceeded to MP's house with Mohandas. When we were nearing Ernakulam, we were discussing about the paucity of get togethers since few months and decided to call Moola. Being Sunday and probably getting bored with ' Empty Nest' Moola told that he and Aravindakshan can meet us at Ernakulam. We went Periappuram's house and spent about 45 minutes there. MP is leaving tomorrow.

We decided to spend some time in Eapen's brother's vacant apartment near Bharat Tourist Home Ernakulam and asked Moola and Aravindakshan to come there. Nearby is a new hotel, started by the sons of Late Mr. Kayikka, the Biriyani specialist. We were on our way to the hotel to collect the Biriyani parcel. Then came the surprise of the day. We saw Ramakrishnan ( our Pillachan) walking along the street. He had come all the way from Palghat to attend some meeting. He also joined our company. We spent some time in the apartment. On our way back, we visited Gangadharan and Chitra - Both were at home. Could see Ganga's mother also, who had a by pass few months back.

Soman was commenting that if we call our classmate Sainudheen for any get together, the only condition he puts forward is that the function should last till evening to get a feeling that ' INNATHE DIVASAM MUTHALAAII'. That was the feeling that we all had today when we returned home late evening. (Jose Tom)

Mathew Periappuram Loses Father
Dear MP: Our family join you in this time of sorrow and pray for your father. Though your father was unwell, he came to our house with your brother Jose when my father died. (Jose Tom)

I just heard (September 8, 2006) from my parents that Mathew P.'s father passed away . Mathew, our  prayers will be with you and your family. Let us all remember Chacko Sir  in our prayers. (Jaya)

Lovely is a Winner Too
Congratulations Deepu. Deepu has passed the step 1 exam at UK. Lovely is deeply relieved. We want to congratulate both Deepu and Lovely. I think Lovely deserves it more than Deepu.

While we are talking about the awards and recognitions received by our KMC alumni, we often overlook the unsung heroes and heroines. Some people sacrifice their lives for the betterment of their family. If there is a person who deserves a high commendation, it is Lovely. After the sudden death of Alex, she has dedicated her life for her kids. She didn't give up, that would have been the easy thing to do. Lovely knew she has to do it alone. But at the same time she didn't become greedy like some others would have done. She often does not collect any fees from poor patients. And she managed to send her kids to US and UK. For one person to do all that while still smiling and still trusting God, I say, she is the biggest winner. Congratulations Lovely. (JM)

Mohandas Won the 'Best Doctor Award' of the Govt. of Kerala
Mohandas has won one of the most prestigious award amongst our classmates. I do not know how many of our friends abroad know that Mohandas has won the ' BEST DOCTOR AWARD OF THE GOVERNMENT OF KERALA' amongst the health service doctors for the year 2004 ? or is it 2003?.

With the limited resources available to a Government doctor in Health services of Kerala, he has done wonders in the places he has worked. He is the only one among our classmates who has taken a post graduate degree in Community Medicine and that shows his commitment to the society. (Jose Tom)

Philsamma Bags Coveted Award
Philsamma was given special recognition for her services by the Brant Healthcare Network in a Ceremony held at Brantford Golf and country club on September 7th, 2006.

Savio and Annie Visits Utica and Hudson
With this visit Savio has completed everyone who have come to the Hudson reunion earlier in the year. Well, that is a great commendable accomplishment. Annie was much more relaxed this time around (well, she may have a false sense of security thinking that the formal introduction ceremony is over. Well, we will see about that!) Here are some photos.

Annakutty is in Complete Remission
We (Jaya and Ike) have been in contact with Thomas George and Rachel since we were planning to visit them In London. By the Grace of God, Annakutty is in complete remission now. Let us all continue to pray for her complete cure. (Jaya)
